Skopje’s White Nights: A Celebration of Culture and Community
White Nights in Skopje is a vibrant celebration of culture, art, and community spirit. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant cultural event, attracting both locals and tourists with its wide array of free activities.
Every September Skopje hostes the annual cultural event, White Nights, featuring exhibitions, performances, installations, concerts, theatrical plays, and film projections, all free of charge for citizens and visitors. A significant portion of the events takes place outdoors at venues such as “Porta Macedonia,” Macedonia Square, Philip II Square, and “Školka“ (Shell) in the City Park.

White Nights have been organized by the Skopje Municipality administration for over 20 years. During this festival, numerous museums open their doors to visitors, visual artists organize free exhibitions, and drama students stage performances in open spaces. In addition to free admission, citizens are provided with free transportation to the city center during “White Nights.” Folk song and dance ensembles also perform free shows. Video artists showcase their performances, and fashion design exhibitions are held. White Nights typically open with performances by traditional folk ensembles and pop concerts by local singers and bands at “Porta Macedonia.”
Cultural institutions participating in White Night 2023 included the Cultural and Information Center Skopje, Ko-Ra gallery, Children’s Cultural Center Karposh, Museum of the City of Skopje, Museum of Contemporary Art, Miladinov Brothers City Library, the National Gallery, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, and the Turkish Theater. At the Macedonian Cinematheque, there аре screenings of Macedonian film and music achievements.
