Skopje Wizz Air Marathon: A Global Athlete’s Destination

One of the premier sports venues in Skopje, drawing in athletes and sports enthusiasts from around the globe, is the Skopje Marathon. This year, the event is scheduled for October 6th, with registration for participants already open. On this day, Skopje’s streets will be transformed with a special traffic management plan to accommodate the event. The marathon will feature five traditional races: the Marathon of 42.195 km, the Half Marathon of 21.097 km, the Humanitarian Race of 5 kilometers, the Children’s Mini Marathon, and the Team Building Race.

The Skopje Marathon is proudly supported by the City of Skopje, the European Union, and the Agency for Youth and Sport, and is organized by the Union of Sports in the City of Skopje. Since 2014, it has been known as the Skopje Wizz Er Marathon, named after its main sponsor, the Hungarian airline Wizz Air. This partnership has been instrumental in the marathon’s growth and development.

Since its inception in 1997, despite occasional interruptions, the Skopje Marathon has continuously improved its organization, contributing to an annual increase in participant numbers. The route of the marathon has been certified by the Association for Marathons and Street Races (AIMs) since 2008, ensuring that all achievements and records are recognized. This certification has also led to the Skopje Marathon’s inclusion in the list of qualifying marathon races for the Summer Olympic Games since 2012.

In 2017, the 13th edition of the Skopje Marathon saw over 8,500 athletes from 51 countries participate, setting a new record for the event. This impressive turnout underscores the marathon’s growing international reputation and its role as a significant sporting event in the region.
